The Victory X MV-10 comes from a very interesting time in Gibson's history. Smack dab in the middle of the infamous Norlin-era, the Victory was Gibson's attempt to break into the "Super-Strat" market, as evidenced by its HSH pickup configuration. In typical Gibson style, they decided to eschew the pointy edges and Floyd Rose tremolo systems of their competitors. Instead, they created a guitar with a refined, sophisticated look that wouldn't be out of place with the far-out and futuristic McCartey-era designs of the 50's, while also looking like a precursor to the more modern PRS guitars that would crop up a few years later. Two humbucking pickups deliver classic Gibson tones while the single coil in the middle allows for Strat-style sounds. A coil tap and 5-way switch allows for further tonal versatility.
Whether this guitars design was 30 years too late or 10 years too early can certainly be debated, but one thing's for sure: The Gibson Victory X MV-10 was an underrated gem in an otherwise turbulant time for the venerable guitar company.
For a 40+ year-old instrument, this is in great shape. The checking on this thing is beautiful! There are a couple of light dings, mostly on the treble horn. There's also a little chip in the treble side binding on the 11th and 13th frets. This does not affect the playability.
For added tuning stability and quicker string changes, this guitar was upgraded with D'Addario Planet Waves Auto-Trim Tuning Machines. It doesn't appear that any extra holes were drilled by the previous owner for this modification. The guitar has been further upgraded with a pair of pseudo-locking strap buttons. They have wide, rhombus-shaped tips to keep the strap on. In order to apply a strap, you'd have to unscrew the buttons, but rest assured that strap ain't goin' nowhere! Comes with original Gibson hardcase and weighs 9 lb 1 oz.
