Introduction to Soloing and Improvisation
Join us for an interactive workshop focused on developing your soloing and improvisation skills! Hosted by Pat Walsh, a professional musician and guitar instructor at A Sound Education.
Class Details:
- Date & Time: Tuesday, February 24th, 6:30 PM - 8:15 PM
- Location: Brookfield Public Library, Meeting Room 2 Downstairs, 3541 Park Ave, Brookfield, IL 60513
- Cost: $55 for A Sound Education students / $65 for non-students
Who Should Attend:
- Age Group: 13 - Adults
- Ability Level: Intermediate to Advanced. Participants should be comfortable playing chords and possess a basic understanding of scales, such as the pentatonic.
What You Will Learn:
This workshop will provide you with the necessary vocabulary and musical fluency to improvise. Topics will include:
- Defining improvisation and studying examples of great soloists.
- Understanding notes, keys, and scale degrees and how to apply them across the fretboard.
- Exploring important scales like pentatonic major and minor, and using scales for different "vibes" (e.g., blues scale vs. melodic/harmonic minor).
- Techniques for building compelling solos, incorporating melody, and moving beyond simply running up and down scales (e.g., bends, leading tones).
What to Bring:
Please bring your instrument (no amplifiers) and note paper or something to write on.
Meet The Instructor:
Pat Walsh started his musical journey over 20 years ago, taking guitar lessons at A Sound Education when he was only 13 years old. Since then he has mastered the instrument and has been teaching and performing professionally with his band Hot Like Mars for over a decade.
