Alright! This is a funky one... Late 40's early 50's National Grand Console Lap Steel! Futuristic looks for the time... a real conversation piece. Every example we can find of these has a slightly different look. Likely early 50's due to the fact that this one comes with legs. The late 40's ones, although they share a similar aesthetic, were a lap-only steel. This one comes with four legs and a case to fit it all! This one includes most of the original bells and whistles, including covers for the heads of the tuners (no ugly string ends) and the pickup handrests. Valco made, this was some of Chicago's finest in the day.
Some of the tuners have been replaced, likely due to age. They sieze up and become difficult to turn without lubrication. New brass nuts were made, some mystery electronic work, and some finish touch up was done a few years ago, not by us.
This guitar is in solid shape for it's age. Wild find, this has seen some rockin' and rollin' in it's day! Finish is checking off in some points, please view the pictures to get an accurate idea. Now unfortunately, there are two pole pieces missing from the bottom pickup. This is the condition we recieved it in. The bottom and top strings are much quieter than the middle strings on the C6 neck for this reason. The wings (wooden parts around the center body) do have a bit of flex to them. Several screws have been replaced where the legs enter the body, but all legs are functional and the guitar has the ability to stand tall, seated or sat. There is one replacement nut holding down the tuner-covers. The originals are 'tele-style' knobs with a threaded nut on the inside. Difficult to find. Original knobs & switch tip intact. The case has seen better days but does function as intended. The leather-ette is beginning to fall apart and the back doesn't stand up too straight, but it works! Take your shot at a rare bird for a good amount less than they average for! We have tried our best to detail everything about this complicated beast. Message with any additional questions.
